1/2 DTPD Reactor Completes it's Initial Run
The 1/2 DTPD Reactor was ran for the first time this week and was successful in producing approximately 50 L of bio-oil. This first run also allowed us to identify problems and to make some minor modifications to the system to increase the efficiency. Throughput during the tests was 75% of full capacity and further runs will keep increasing this until it's full capacity is reached.
The dryer system was run using a new furnace module which improved it's performance and was able to sustain the temperatures required to achieve adaquate moisture removal.
1/2 DTPD Reactor Testing Preformed
Heat from a custom furnace was injected into the reactor to test it's performance during startup conditions. The system was found to preform very well with high temperatures being reaching rapidly. The hydraulic system was also tested and found to be working correctly. Work is continuing on the condenser system which is expected to be completed soon with the char stabilization system following afterwards.
The new furnace design can also be used to provide heat to the dryer system eliminating some problems encountered with the previous design. This will allow unused heat from the reactor to be recycled reducing the power consumption of the system.
1/2 DTPD Reactor Nearing Completion
ABRI's 1/2 DTPD pyrolysis plant is nearing completion, the last several long weeks of work have payed off and many of our goals were accomplished. The unit is now almost completely assembled and we are currently waiting on several other modules to be fabricated before it can be run. Once these are complete then testing of the unit can begin.
Work on our second reactor is going well and it is expected to be completed sometime soon after the first one is complete and tested. A 3rd is also currently under construction and is expected to be completed by mid-summer.
AES Tests High Temperature Ceramic Filter
Alternative Energy Solutions Ltd., ABRI's area representative has successfully tested a prototype high temperature ceramic filter. The filter was initially designed for producer gas clean-up for down draught type gasifiers for sizes up to 2 MW. Basic advantages are cleaner gas - resulting in longer engine life and higher gas train efficiencies with no or lesser contaminant discharges.
The filter uses element combinations dependent on gas flows, its surface filtration technology and can be run at temperatures of up to 900 C. High operating temperature means the thermal cracking of gas components occurs, solids separation is close to 100% The filters have periodic reverse pulse cleaning, and do not require element replacement or maintenance.
AES enjoys the assistance of our UK filter specialist partners and will apply this to most gas filtering enquires.

1 DTPD Reactor Module Delivered
Two "One Ton" 1-DTPD reactor modules were recently delivered to us and the construction of the condenser and char stabilization systems is underway. Many of the additional components have been fabricated and are being installed. Several more weeks are required to finish work on the unit with testing happening shortly thereafter.
Each unit will undergo testing at a local facility to ensure they meet operational criteria before delivery. This also allows us to produce hard data on the plant while it is being run and identify how it can be improved.
Bio-oil and other valuable products from poultry manure and litter
An article on ABRI's process to convert chicken manure to Bio-oil was recently published in Manure Manager magazine, click on the link on the right to read the article.
Manure Manager is a locally produced magazine which covers manures use and new technologies in the field for its application and handling.
Prototype Gasifier Test Run - Jan. 24th, 2008
Our prototype gasifier was modified for increased air intake allowing more efficient burning and higher tar reduction. The produced gases burned with an almost invisible flame due to the purity of the gas. A small 10 hp diesel engine was tested using these producer gases to generate electricity, the next step is to modify the gasifier to remove a higher concentration of tars and preform tests using diesel and spark ignition engines.
1/2 DTPD Dryer Test - Jan. 23rd, 2008
The half ton DTPD dryer module was tested today and the results were encouraging, the particle reduction was well within the specified requirements for the system. Future tests will be preformed to measure how the dryer performs under different conditions and to allow optimization for the best possible efficiency.
The physical systems on the unit worked well and the chain-flails were shown to run correctly with minimal vibration. The hydraulic system was able to run the airlock and auger feed systems without an problems.
